Harry Williams Revamped
Football NSW has redeveloped its’ Indigenous Talent Identification Program with a variety of Talent Identification camps across Southern NSW, Riverina, Western NSW and Metropolitan Sydney to commence in late March.
In previous years, Football NSW conducted a tournament style selection of players to participate in the Harry Williams Cup at Valentines Sports Park.
In 2009, the Harry Williams Indigenous Talent Identification Program will aim to interact with Indigenous talent via two one-day coaching clinics at two different locations in the above regions.
The revamped Indigenous Talent Identification Program has been put in place by Football NSW so that players can be developed within their own region.
Players identified as ‘gifted and talented’ will be placed into Football NSW pathways programs on a scholarship basis.
Inaugural Indigenous Socceroo Harry Williams sees this as a major step forward in Indigenous Talent Identification.
“Restructure of our original program will enhance our efforts to tap into the obvious talent that exists in the indigenous community.
“The key here is about inclusion within existing resources, and if a regional player receives the same opportunities as our metro counterparts, then we could reasonably expect a greater return within our state wide network and junior development.”
Such a view is echoed by Football NSW Technical Director Norm Boardman.
“Myself and Harry (Williams) have initiated the program which gives all players within the boundaries of Football NSW a chance to trial and train in their own regions before being placed into a program close to where they live at the appropriate level.
“Our long term goal is to provide opportunities for Indigenous footballers to represent their communities, regions, state and country, just like Indigenous players such as Harry Williams, Jade North, Travis Dodd and Lydia Williams.”
